I am very overjoyed, proud, and simultaneously humbled to let those of you who were not at Otakuthon 2014's Masqarade Award Ceremony know that Miss Messy Mia and I (as team Detailed Mess) won Canada’s World Cosplay Summit's preliminaries and will be representing Canada in 2015. I also had the wonderful opportunity to judge the regular OtakuthonMasquerade Saturday night (before I found out the WCS results) and all I could think the entire time was HOW AMAZING Cosplay is in Canada, and how it would be the GREATEST honour to get to represent this country’s amazing talent. We will work hard to do you all proud on the world stage.

I also want to congratulate ALL the other contestants- it took MAD GUTS to prepare costumes and get on the stage for WCS. All of you looked amazing and I’m honoured to have performed on the same stage as you all! A special hats off to my friends Calamity and MeltingMirror Cosplay (as team Polar Diamonds) who are the runners up! You two Cosplayers inspire me with your work, and your participation in the Cosplay community. You both deserve so much praise for what you do and I would love to conspire with you both to make amazing future cosplays together.

(Pictures should be released soon-ish, and I’ll be sure to share them when they’re available on my Facebook)

Niq van der Aa, known online as Detailed-Illusion, is a cosplayer and aspiring costume designer from Ottawa, Ontario. He has been cosplaying since he was 14 years old, going to his first con when he was thirteen as Fai d. Flowright from Tsubasa (which to date is still his all time favourite fictional character). He is an avid gamer, a lover of fantasy and a frequent reader of both American comics and Japanese manga. In high school, Detailed-Illusion studied theatre where he ended up focusing on backstage work as a set and costume designer. After high school, he toured a theatre show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, for which he was both a costume and set designer, as well as a performer. Since, he has dabbled in Fashion Design school (finding it far too slow paced and restrictive for the cosplayer/costumer he is at heart), worked as a costume designer for an independent film project, and of course continued to go to as many cons a year as he can afford, creating plenty of new costumes for each one. He has worked his way up the ranks, entering masquerades in America and Canada, and is now a master level cosplayer. He considers his specialty pattern drafting, and detailed sewing and accessory work. As part of team "Detailed Mess" has won the first World Cosplay Summit Canadian preliminaries and will represent Canada along with Miss Messy Mia in WCS 2015 in Japan. His most notable awards in the Masters category were for Best Reinterpretation for his Genderbent Elsa (Costume-Con 32, 2014) and Best in Show for his Thranduil (Pop Expo 2013).

It's so hard for me to find really good genderbent cosplayers now-a-days! But you, sir, take the cake! :D
You cosplays look great, I can only hope to be like you when I get my hobby on its feet son... Hopefully I'll even be posting my first WIP pictures by the end of the week! :)
Keep up to great work, perhaps we may cross paths at a con one fine day. I do the east coast ones most often, you?

thank you soo much for your kind words! And I wish you all the luck and success with your cosplaying! I will watch out for the WIPS

I right now travel all over. I attend everything in Ottawa and MOntreal, as well as Fanime in California. By next year I do wanna go to cons in Halifax, as well as some east costs ones!

Speaking of Ottawa, would you have happened to be the Thranduil I saw win big on SyFy's "Heroes of Cosplay"? If so, that was some amazing craftsmanship and your portrayal of the character was spot on! If not, then this is awkward...haha

Hi! I'm considering making a Kid Flash cosplay for next years Ottawa ComiCon (not this one obviously xD ) and it's my first cosplay. I was wondering what type of fabric and props you used and if you have any advice? Thank you ^^
